Nov. 30. A pedestrian is in Atrium Main with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car at the intersection of Westmoreland Lake and West Catawba this morning.
Cornelius Police identified her as Joan Messier. CPD would not release her age, but voter registration records show a Joan Messier on nearby Chandler’s Landing.
Police said she was not using a crosswalk to cross the road.
According to a press release, Messier entered the travel lane and was struck by a vehicle that had just turned onto West Catawba Avenue, traveling eastbound, from Silver Quay Drive.
The incident happened at about 7:06 am. Sunrise was about 7:13.
Police said there was no indication the vehicle was speeding and it doesn’t appear the driver was at fault.

How could she use a pedestrian crossing when there isn’t one there? The only crosswalk on Catawba south of Jeton is at Westmoreland/Nautical drive, and it’s sketchy as it’s a busy interchange.
How many people have to get hurt, before Cornelius takes pedestrian and cyclest safety seriously? With the density there should be a half dozen pedestrian crossings on West Catawba between Jeton and Sam Fur, and the speed limit should be 35 in that stretch.
I’m in 100% agreement with Nick on this. By the way, is there any data on the number drivers crashing into people walking or biking in Davidson and Davidson in which no charges were filed? For example, what of the young girl who was hit by a driver last year while in the crosswalk on her bike? I seem to recall the police did not charge the driver BECAUSE THE GIRL WAS ON HER BICYCLE IN THE CROSSWALK.
Any chance you mean Cornelius? (The girl on a bike was on Jetton in Cornelius.)
Thank you for this needed correction. Yes. The crosswalk referenced is the one on Jetton Road at the park entrance. Was there any follow up on this story. I seem to recall also that the car driver was unlicensed.
There is no crosswalk from Silver Quay Dr to the bus stop on the other side of Catawba. It is like playing Frogger trying to cross Catawba. No one stops. There is no safe way to cross Catawba here. We need a crosswalk with lights, PLEASE.
Hey Newsroom (the writer of this piece).
Nice job on reviewing the facts before publishing this as like Nick said above-THERE IS NO CROSSWALK. Not only that, there is no sidewalk from from Edinburgh Square to the Publix. You either cross the road or walk on the side of road with no sidewalk.
Maybe a new title should be “what needs to be done to add a crosswalk or light so others are not struck”. I will be anxiously awaiting that piece.
