Town Board votes on whether they support CMS $2.5 billion bond referendum

Oct. 2. At tonight’s Town Board meeting, commissioners will be asked if they support the $2.5 billion CMS bond issue on the ballot countywide this fall. Both Mayor Woody Washam and Commissioner Denis Bilodeau, Washam’s opponent, have already voiced their support, but this will give other commissioners a chance to let their feelings be known to voters.
“Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is proposing a $2.5 billion-dollar bond package to fund 30 projects that address school facility needs,” said Deputy Mayor Wayne Herron in a memo accompanying the proposed resolution of support to the commissioners.
The bond package would replace three aging North Meck schools—Cornelius Elementary, Huntersville Elementary and North Mecklenburg High School.
If the bond issue is approved, town taxpayers will see an increase of one cent in the county portion of their tax rate in each of three years: 2025, 2028 and 2029. CMS officials estimate the increase for the owner of an average home will amount to a total of approximately $120.
The meeting will begin at 6 pm in Town Hall on Catawba Avenue. It will also be live streamed on the town website: www.cornelius.org.

The Meck Co Commissioners were split on the decision and at least three Commissioners are not in favor, citing the high price tag and the fact that they don’t know exactly how high our taxes will need to be raised to pay off the debt. Additionally these are replacements to existing schools so added capacity, which is what is needed, is not being optimally addressed.

We as the tax payers aren’t really sure what much less where this money is going.I have personally built add on as well as new facilities aka School’s here Mecklenburg county.I know first hand how much is needed in terms of money. However why are we building bigger if we’re maximizing the quality of all of said educational quality is not equal across the board. I’ve seen the education of our generations fall and fualter. We must focus and bolster the efficiency and quality to provide exemptaul education for those generations that are here now and possibly slow the migration from other states so to speak. I vote no to give more money to a system that is failing unless they can give a clear and conclusive itinerary to include what we know now.The countries standard should not be our own and we should set ourselves much higher in order to catch-up on what we’ve already taken for granted. Ect our Teacher’s,Stem programs for all,and most of all finding a way to disassociate media and societally norms. To influence those most vulnerable to such back into the educational reprieve they deserve.I can go on however that discussion is suited for aore profound audience. If you’re truly willing to invest in the future we should take their “all bet it view” into our overall consideration.
