Dec. 3. Cornelius resident Tommy Walker had more than 50 years experience in appliance repair and operated Tommy’s Appliance Service until retiring a few years ago. Tommy offers his advice for various appliances.
Choosing an appliance repair company can be very challenging. Our community has seen a large population explosion, which brings service companies from everywhere. Getting referrals should be done through friends, neighbors or family member.
Double check with the Better Business Bureau. Also, try to look for a business that’s been established for a while. The ones that heavily advertise are generally the ones that cost the most.
Once you’ve made your selection, ask questions like what is the trip charge, warranty on labor, warranty on part or parts.
I see a lot of vehicle vehicles that say appliance repair, but have no inventory in their vehicle. Companies like that may charge multiple trip charges and, in my opinion, that is unfair. I only charged for one trip charge.
Rarely does an appliance need multiple parts, but it can happen. When your service man arrives, tell him you would like an estimate of the repair before he makes that repair.
