Tenant house on the move

Historic tenant house on Alexander Farm / Photos by Jason Benavides
Aug. 19. The tenant house on Alexander Farm was making its way to the corner of Westmoreland and W. Catawba Thursday afternoon. The historic structure was jacked up and towed across a field to its new site.
The tenant structure is significant because so few are left in a once-agricultural county where sharecropping was commonplace. Historian Dan Morrill of Preserve Mecklenburg was on the scene much of the afternoon.
The $110-million mixed-use development includes plans for a Lidl grocery store, a Papa John’s Pizza, commercial space, 70 single-family homes and a 145-unit active adult complex. If all goes according to schedule, some stores could open in the fall of 2023.

I hope you all can donate it to a museum in NC to display because it is historical . There is such a great signifcance of history in NC . Are there any civil right museums of the sort there?
It says it’s being towed to its new site so hopefully it will be restored and be a part of the new complex. The old house on Gilead Road was restored and is available to view so hopefully this will be similar for all to view and enjoy a part of local history.
I’m not sure what’s older – the tenant house or the truck being used to move it!
Ha! They told us it’s a 1976 Ford.
This is ridiculous. This project has been on hold because of this stupid house. Get over it, the priority should be for making things better in this town, not focusing on past relics. The people is this town really do not have much sense…
Glad it’s being saved. Thanks for the awesome pictures
