Location of sewage spill in cove adjacent to Jetton Park

July 5. There’s been another sewage spill in Lake Norman, this time in a cove between Jetton Park and Halyard Pointe/Double Eagle in The Peninsula.

A pipe failure on July 4 caused the overflow, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services (CMSW).

It’s the third spill in five weeks in Cornelius waters.

The new spill is about 875 gallons of sewage caused by a pipe failure at 18630 Jetton Road. The line is being repaired and the discharge discontinued, according to a press release from CMSW.

They issued a “No Swim” advisory.

CMSW staff will monitor water quality in the area until bacteria levels are determined to be suitable for human contact at which time the no-swim advisory will be lifted.

Who is responsible for the spill and more importantly are they responsible for the clean up and costs. Why are there so many unnecessary spills into Lake Norman – I thought finding out where all utility and service lines are located would be a requirement before digging. I hope, we, as taxpayers, do not bear the cost of the clean-up.

Are these spills still caused by Spectrum cable, digging to replace or install cable like previous spills? Do the pipes and infrastructure need to be replaced in the Peninsula and other areas due to original faulty construction or installation? If so should Cornelius be proactive to prevent another spill? The lake is so important to the town bringing tourists and residents to Cornelius. The least the town can do is keep it clean of sewage. these spills are unsafe, disgusting and are an embarrassment to the town who should take immediate action to stop them

How can we be one of the best cities in North Carolina when we can not figure out how to flush our own toilets. This is ridiculous! It is disgusting. Our leaders should be embarrassed! Figure this out or find someone who can.

100% certain the spill occurred on July 4 or is the date when it was discovered or reported?

It’s past time to get serious about reducing the recurrence of sewage spills into Lake Norman. Neither preventive measures nor penalties currently in effect are doing the job. Yuk!

This keeps happening. As citizens, property owners and neighbors, let’s require comprehensive reporting on the systemic and specific causes of the leaks. To our elected officials: Please ensure transparency, accountability and future prevention. Sounds like an important item for upcoming elections.
At stake? The safety of our drinking water and property values … just to name 2.
