Nov. 16. By Dave Yochum. The town’s new Christmas tree, including a star, ornaments, power supply and ballast tank, went up in the Cain Center for the Arts plaza yesterday.

The cost: $45,500.

Trimmings

Wreaths and pole wraps for light poles cost an additional $7,000, with the total cost of $52,500 coming out of the municipal budget.

The new tree replaces the tree that went up behind Town Hall where the “Light Up Cornelius” was held.

Festival street

This year’s event will be held Nov. 25, from 4 pm to 7 pm, with Catawba Avenue closing from 1 pm to 8 pm.

There will be local performers, train rides, craft vendors, photos with Santa, a s’mores station and a model train display, as well as food and beverage vendors.

Tree lighting will be at approximately 5:45 pm.

While Catawba is closed, use Newcenter Drive or Gem Street as alternate routes.

$45,000…WHAT? I can’t believe my taxes are paying for that. I don’t mind the town spending for tree but that seems exhorbitant.

I can’t believe we are using tax payer dollars to push funds to the Cain Center. What is going on? Our Town Christmas Tree has served us well for years and it hasn’t cost the community $45K. Something is terribly wrong with with this cash sucking business. What was supposed to be a community asset is now becoming a community liability. Stop this nonsense.

To promote our city and make the holidays for kids joyful. I’ll pay anything it takes.
