NC is 10th most impacted state by natural disasters
Aug. 16. With the deadliest US wildfires ever estimated to have caused $5.5 billion in damage and claimed more than 100 lives in Hawaii, a new WalletHub study says North Carolina is No. 10 on the list of states most impacted by natural disasters.
Hawaii came in at No. 38, while Mississippi and Louisiana came in at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. Fewest of these natural disasters: Maine.
WalletHub compared all 50 states across two metrics:
—The number of climate disasters causing at least $1 billion in damage since 1980,
—The loss amount per capita of those disasters.
The current situation in Hawaii is especially impactful given the fact that Hawaii normally has few natural disasters causing at least $1 billion in damage.
North Carolina (1=Most, 25=Avg.):
—4th in number of Climate Disasters Causing $1 Billion+ in Damage (1980 – 2023)
—16th in loss Amount from Climate Disasters Causing $1 Billion+ in Damage per Capita (1980 – 2023)
Fifteen other natural disasters have already caused over $1 billion in damage each during 2023.

They weren’t wildfires. They were fires caused by poor maintenance from the electric company. This was a known hazard that the government and company did nothing to prevent.
