Cornelius police officer dies in biking accident

Officer Gabriel Stainback
Sept. 15. Cornelius police officer Gabriel Stainback passed away on Saturday in Concord after being struck by a car while on a bike ride with his wife. Stainback, a recent graduate of High Point University, was hired by the Cornelius Police Department as a cadet late last year.
The department said Stainback went through the Basic Law Enforcement Training and joined the force in December 2024. In college he was a two-time Big South champion in the decathlon and the Concord native was recently married. No additional information was provided about the accident.
“It is with great sadness in our hearts that we mourn with the family of Patrol Officer Gabriel Stainback regarding his tragic death on Saturday,” said Cornelius Police Chief David Baucom, in a statement released on Monday afternoon. “Gabriel was not only a great Police Officer, he was a great person. He had accomplished so much in his short lifetime. From his loving wife and family to all of his friends, it is obvious he was loved deeply by everyone. He was a servant in every aspect of his life and will be deeply missed. Please keep Gabriel’s family and our department in your thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks.”
