Rendering ‘Sculpting the Future’ of the Cain Center

Sept. 11. The Cain Center has released an artist’s rendering that shows plans for a historic parcel on Catawba Avenue that will house ceramics studios and offices as well as a “creative courtyard” that will part of a new western gateway to downtown.

The Cain Center, which celebrated its first anniversary in January, will preserve and repurpose two of three homes on the site which was listed with Lake Norman Realty at $1.6 million. The three houses date back to the early 1900s when Cornelius was starting a second life as a mill town, the first being agriculture.

Three of the four parcels on the market contain turn-of-the century houses in various states of repair.

The house on the corner of Catawba and School Street will be torn down to make room for further expansion and development.

A courtyard will be a “hub for creative placemaking and a community gathering spot” for events, workshops and performances.

The new facility will also offer expanded resources and dedicated spaces for ceramic artists as well as office spaces for staff.

A four-lot parcel along Catawba Avenue at School Street was listed at $1.6 million.
