Tree Canopy Commission goes out on a limb in favor of giant trees

April 1. The Cornelius Tree Canopy Commission wants to earmark stately sequoias—sequoiadendron giganteum in ancient Latin—for preservation going forward. Commissioners said they wanted to take the first step toward preserving this mighty species “for the good of mankind.” The vote was 4-1 with John Muir dissenting. He said there were no sequoias in Cornelius. The measure goes before the Town Board in May.

Who Speaks for the Trees?

In related news, the Town Communications Department will hold a series of coffee chats entitled “Who Speaks for the Trees?” The first will focus on the economic benefits of clear-cutting on April 21 at the LKN Meeting Center, from 8 am to 9:30 am.

    Wonderful.. I am guessing this was on the docket at the town retreat earlier this week! Next year they can consider saving the cuckoo bird here in Cornelius!
