Aug. 13. By Dave Vieser. With new pedestrian crosswalks already in place on West Catawba and Jetton Extension and more on the way—Meridian and Catawba, North Main and Legion, and Torrence Chapel Park—there seems to be some confusion as to when a motorist can legally proceed.

Cornelius Police Chief David R. Baucom
“If a pedestrian has crossed the roadway and the lights are still flashing a driver can proceed with the lights flashing before the lights time out,” said Cornelius Police Chief David Baucom.
“This is the same for any crosswalk with lights including the new one on Westmoreland Road,” he added.

Maybe the town could increase revenue by putting a patrol at the 4 way stop intersection of Hickory and Tryon.
Walking is dangerous around that area. drivers seem to forget to stop for stop signs or people.
Thanks for clearing that up, I wasn’t sure if I’d get a ticket for not waiting on the lights to stop flashing or not. Thanks Chief!
People dont know what to do if the red light is flashing instead of a steady red light. Im afraid the confusion could lead to a collision.
