Sheriff summoned by Cornelius officials over speed enforcement

The Cornelius Town Board is asking Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden to attend their next public meeting on March 4 and explain why sheriffs descended upon Jetton Road Sunday afternoon for speed enforcement. McFadden was installed as sheriff in December, having defeated Irwin Carmichael in November.
“It is my understanding that there was little advance notification to our town police,” said Commissioner Kurt Naas. “I feel this creates an unnecessary adversarial situation.”
Naas also said he had been contacted by residents concerned that there was a serious police or crime situation.
Indeed, there was apparently no official coordination with local police. Speeders were clocked near Jetton Park where a fleet of sheriff vehicles waited to chase down violators.
The speed limit is 35 mph, but there is a virtual straight-away between Stableford just west of the park and Old Jetton where there have been a number of crashes.
Cornelius Police have pulled over drivers doing 80 mph on Jetton near the park, according to citation and arrest reports provided by Cornelius police to Cornelius Today.
Historically, the county sheriff’s department rarely does speed enforcement and the commissioners also seek to know if there has been a change in their operation policy.

This was a serious WASTE of manpower and taxpayer dollars. Over 10 Officers, in official vehicles, on a Sunday (Overtime?) harassing residence. The Sheriff should resign.
The fact that he aids and abets illegal aliens should place have him ousted, but as the County Council is also embracing illegal immigration I doubt this will occur.
I have been in contact with Cornelius PD regarding the 80moh citation. This is incorrect. Drivers have NOT been cited for doing 80mph in a 35mph.
Cornelius PD says in that instance most likely the driver would be arrested, not cited.
On Feb 8th a driver was cited for the infraction of “Speeding 15+mph or 80mph”, which is standard citation language. The driver was cited for doing 53mph, NOT 80mph.
Please issue a correction.
They need to stay in Charlotte & protect criminal illegal immigrants.
That is their number one priority.
How is enforcing speed limits “harassing residences”?
People of Cornelius don’t need a turf war within Law Enforcement over enforcing the speed limit.
Someone within the Sheriff’s dept thought it was important enough to do something, good job!!!
There are much more important things for them to do than overstep the local police and take over. The Cornelius Police can handle there own area for traffic violations. If not then why have a local Police force in the first place?
You can break the law and enter the country illegally and then break the law again by selling drugs, rape, murder etc. and our Sheriff will protect your rights but don’t you dare Speed ! ! !
While you are at it please ask the Sheriff why aids and abets illegal aliens.
The fact that they did this without communicating with Cornelius police is a little unprofessional; however, the residents and people complaining about this need to grow up, quit being babies, and learn to drive the posted speed limit and not 50-60 mph… I go to Jetton frequently and there are so many times I’ve almost been run over, hit, and afraid due to the speed of cars in that road. Lest we forget, 2 you g boys died on that road 10-13 years ago due to unsafe speed.
Your comments allude to a bigger problem. Ignorance is showing. I wonder how many of you complained about the myriad of complaints you’ve just voiced before he was installed. You won’t be concerned until it’s your child or relative that becomes a victim.
