TODAY. Cornelius Today hosts the Old-fashioned BBQ and Candidate Forum 11:30 am to 1 pm  Oct. 2 at Town Hall. The cost to attend is $8.

Moderator Lisa Mayhew will ask the six candidates for five seats on the Town Board  the questions. You will learn how they plan to tackle issues facing our town in a fun atmosphere. Join in the rousing patriotic songs and enjoy BBQ, the fixin’s and beverages, all for $8.

The doors open a little after 11 a.m. and the event closes at 1. You can meet the candidates before and after the formal program which is held in the Community Room at Town Hall on Catawba Avenue. .

The Town Commission incumbents who are running again are Jim Duke, Dave Gilroy, Thurman Ross and Woody Washam.

The two who hope to be elected for the first time are Denis P. Bilodeau, a first-time candidate, and Dr. Michael F. Miltich who ran in 2013.

Rev. Fred Hoffman will lead the Invocation; Sen. Jeff Tarte will lead the Pledge of Allegiance; Donna Moffett will be the timekeeper; and Julie Jones is the keyboardist.

Question for the I-77 toll road: 1- Is it realistic to think that a two-working family needing to use the toll road can afford the potential of $20 round trip which amounts to $10,000/year (2 people x $20 X 5 days/week x 50 weeks/yr); 2- Free access with 3 or more carpoolers is also not sustainable given the fact that of at least one person may need to to work overtime; personal absences; illnesses, etc; 3- Why is there not a better planning function between NCDOT and Zoning board as uncontrolled growth in Lake Norman has been permitted without adequate infrastructure to support this growth, the citizens were not at fault but must pay for their creations; 4- Is there a realization that businesses using the interstate will have their costs increases and will be passed onto their customers; 5- Given the excessive new costs to residents using the toll road and given new fees and taxes which will eventually levied as the state and county finds the need for more money in time… how are people to afford living in this area?

Thanks for letting me raise these questions. The Governor will not respond to my concerns so perhaps this forum will enable the officials to respond. I hope some or all of these questions may be raised with published replies.
    Thank you

I would like you to ask what these candidates will do to preserve the very limited green space that is left in the town and if they would rather see large tracts of land like Augustalee or the farm at Westmoreland be preserved or developed. We have few opportunities to preserve our already overcrowded town and once they are gone, they are gone forever.
