June 7. Dave Vieser. At their June 5 meeting, the Town Board honored a retiring police dog, Lex, a Cornelius Police canine officer since 2017.

“Due to health conditions that would put Lex at high risk in his working police dog role, we requested his official retirement,” said Police Chief David Baucom.

Commissioners concurred, unanimously approving the retirement and transferring all rights of ownership and responsibility for his continued care and well-being to his handler Corporal Derek Queen.

The department has located a replacement for Lex, and will be making an announcement within the next several weeks.

Thank you for retiring LEX. I’m sure he has put in an awful lot of time energy, and emotion into his work. I’m glad that he’ll be able to live out his life with his proper master/owner. There are people that don’t work as hard as our service animals. Happy retirement Lex. Thank you for your service.🇺🇸💜🙏🏻
