Nov. 1. November is Native American Indian Heritage Month, recognizing our nation’s first inhabitants.

—North Carolina is home to eight state recognized tribes: Coharie, Eastern Band of Cherokee, Haliwa-Saponi, Lumbee, Meherrin, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Sappony and Waccamaw-Siouan.

—More than 130,000 American Indians live in North Carolina

—North Carolina has the seventh largest American Indian population in the nation.

Nov. 26 is Native American Heritage Day.
