New pedestrian crossings planned for W. Catawba

Nov. 22. By Dave Vieser. With the widening of West Catawba Avenue several years away, the Cornelius Town Board has decided to spend $216,000 on two new pedestrian crossings, one near where a pedestrian was killed in 2022.
It will take about four months for them to be designed and fully installed.
The locations—West Catawba Avenue in the vicinity of Harborside Drive/Westmoreland Lake Road and one at Robbins Park—were selected after the town commissioned a study of traffic counts between Nantz Road and Vineyard Point Lane.

The funds were approved unanimously at the Town Board’s Nov. 20 meeting.
Cornelius will be responsible for maintaining the crossings, even though West Catawba Avenue is a state-maintained road.
In addition to the appropriate pavement markings and signage the crossings will feature Rectangular Rapid Reflective Beacons (RRRB), which are pedestrian-activated lights on the side of the road.

Thanks Cornelius Board! We will miss Colin!
We really need a street light at Harborside Drive with all the incoming and outgoing fir the homes and Port City Club restaurant. It’s a dangerous corner.
Great idea. Might need to look at Knox Road next
Knox Rd is dangerous for cars and pedestrians
Really? before the road is widened so it can be removed once the road is widened. Logical thinking!
The road won’t be widened for at LEAST another 3-4 at the EARLIEST!
Outstanding. Thank you!!
The #1 job of a municipality is public safety. Data shows that over the course of a weekend, several hundred pedestrian crossings occur on this specific stretch of Catawba at non-crosswalks. One fatality is too many. Since we can’t control DOT’s timeline, the town board should provide the appropriate infrastructure to ensure public safety over the next several years, prior to widening. Town staff was savvy enough to choose equipment that can be re-used elsewhere, minimizing waste and maximizing tax payer dollars.
Outstanding. Thank you!!
Thank you, Commissioners!
It is a modest cost and well worth it to make pedestrian traffic safer. While it will occasionally make vehicles pause briefly for a crossing, I would think it would not increase the time it takes for any vehicle to travel any significant portions of West Catawba.
Well done!
Well said Commissioner Sansbury. As frequent frogger of the Westmorland/West Catawba area I thank you and the town for addressing this issue in a timely manner.
