US Rep. Alma Adams, Major Tony Sharpe at National Night Out Aug. 1 in Smithville Park

Aug. 2. Hundreds of people attended National Night Out last night at Smithville Park, including US Rep. Alma Adams, who represents the 12th Congressional District.

National Night Out, which promotes community relations with police departments nationwide, included free hot dogs, a dunk-a-cop booth and a K-9 demonstration. TopDeck Foundation, which supports the Cornelius Police Dept. with critical items ranging from bullet-proof vests to motor bikes for off-road tasks, was there with a booth as well.

Having won a special election in November 2014, Adams, a Ph.D., was sworn as the 100th woman elected to the 113th Congress. She was elected to her fifth full term representing the 12th Congressional District of North Carolina this past November.
