Mike Russell is new COO at MadVapes
Mike Russell, the chairman of the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce, has left Energy United and is now chief operating officer of MadVapes, a $40 million-plus company that was started in Huntersville in 2009.
MadVape’s electronic cigarettes help people stop smoking. Mark Hoogendoorn is the founder.
The fast-growing company essentially sells liquid nicotine online and from more than two dozen retail stores.
Russell could not be reached for comment. He became chamber chair in January, and will turn over the reins to the chamber this coming year to Callan Bryan, an attorney from Davidson.
E-cigarettes have gained widespread popularity, growing into a $2 billion industry with millions of users.

The claim that e-cigs help people stop smoking is unfounded as there have been no long term studies and the American Lung Association does not support it. To date…..that claim by e-cig promoters is only a sales pitch.
Meanwhile….the largest group of people picking up this new potentially dangerous habit are young adults and teens. And the reason is because the promoters actively pursue this audience. Those involved in promoting this product are simply opportunists looking to make money, not help with anyone’s addictions or health problems.

To the above commenter: 100% false. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that e-cigarettes help people to quit smoking. Also, it’s ironic that you say that it’s a baseless claim, then go on to say that “the largest group of people picking up this new potentially dangerous habit are young adults and teens.” Evidence? Based on your own argument, there isn’t enough long-term data to support your claim.
The largest group of people picking up the habit are former smokers. 99% of people who vape used to smoke.
There is also plenty of data regarding the safety of e-cigarettes compared to traditional tobacco. So, even IF teens and young adults were the most attracted to e-cigarettes, wouldn’t that be a good thing? You’re essentially complaining that e-cigarettes are bad because they are leading to lower tobacco usage for young people.
