Ocular Melanoma. She was the third and youngest student from Hopewell High School to be diagnosed with the rare eye cancer.

The former Langtree 2nd grade teacher was honored with a mural placed in the 2nd grade hall now named Summer’s Way. She received her teaching degree from UNC Pembroke and was a charter member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority which focused on “building relationships.”

Her mother Janie Slusarick and husband Scot accepted the mural. The Cornelius residents said Summer was someone who “always saw the good in everyone.”

    Summer was an amazing teacher and friend. She fought the good fight with grace every step of the way.
    Always remember you never walked alone.
