What the proposed cell tower would look like

Dec. 18. By Dave Vieser. Monday evening is “last call” for residents to comment on a proposal to erect a 199-foot cell phone tower near Jetton Road. The Cornelius Planning Board passed the issue on to the Town Board last month, narrowly recommending approval of the tower in a 4-3 vote.

The public hearing Dec. 21 will begin at 6 pm. Residents can attend in person at Town Hall to comment or send their comments via email to the Town Board. ([email protected]). A final decision on the controversial proposal is expected on Jan. 4.

Opposition from commissioner

“For the record, I am solidly opposed to this tower at this location,” Commissioner Jim Duke said earlier this month. “Surely there are other less intrusive locations.” The tower would replace a much smaller tower adjacent to the Lake Norman Cove at Jetton neighborhood near Jetton Park.

The proposal for the new cell phone tower, which would be 84 feet higher than the existing structure, was submitted by Florida based PeakNet.

Opposition from neighbors

Nearby citizens are not happy.

“We were not consulted on this proposal,” Tony Grisanti, said president of the Lake Norman Cove at Jetton HOA. “We believe our community will be degraded and our property values diminished if this goes through.”

Attorney Tom Johnson, who represents PeakNet, said the 199-foot height achieves the best cell phone coverage in the area, without the need for lighting. Cell phone providers on the tower would include AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

If you lived on parts of Torrence Chapel, Bethel Church, Nantz Rd or close to the lake in any of the condos, you would realize how necessary this project. Mr. Duke, how would you feel if you had to get outside or to a different room to call the police or fire department. Approve this tower!

We need the cell phone tower because of poor reception. They can always enhance the tower by adding faux pine branches like in other areas. The values of property will not be degraded it might improve the situation since most of us need our cell phones on a daily basis. Our area, especially the Peninsula, need better cell phone coverage.

Oh Puhleeeez. It’s silly when people whine and cry about things like cell towers. Yes they are generally unsightly and if it were in my immediate backyard I might have issues. But the same crybabies whine when they don’t have a good signal. Can’t have it both ways.

I wonder if the attorneys or owners of PeakNet have a 199ft Cell Tower in their front yard? This project is a revenue grab for PeakNet or perhaps a ‘need’ for a cell phone user that lives 10miles from this proposed tower? Am I they only once that notices that 199ft cell towers are placed near major highways and away from humans in homes? I vote that PeakNet builds their tower in Florida and leaves us alone.

Funny…I made a comment earlier today and it was deleted. WOW!!! Not vulgar or rude, just truthful. I guess you can’t make a comment on some ‘supposed’ news sites if the editorial board doesn’t like it. Shame on you Cornelius Today.

In today’s tech world, how can we not allow these cell towers to exist. The world is ever changing and we should be able to adapt to the sight of a cell tower. We have so many more beautiful things on the Peninsula to distract us. It would be interesting to know if people initially opposed telephone poles as much as cell towers when they were installed to establish communication. Perhaps the opposition doesn’t have the problem with dropped calls, but if they did, they would most likely have a very different vote.

    Yeah, I don’t think it’s a good idea

Aren’t there enough cancer issues in our area? Our reception in Jetton Cove is fine, maybe the people where the reception is suffering would like for it to be put in their neighborhood?
