May 27. [Update May 31] By Dave Yochum. If one steals from the ABC store on Hwy. 21, where’s the first place one might go? Answer: Right next door.

Apparently that’s what happened on Friday evening after a larceny occurred at the Cornelius ABC store.

Mecklenburg County ABC officers were investigating the incident when they went to Cashion’s where they encountered their suspect.

Sources said it all took place in the Cashion’s parking lot.

Another individual with the suspect pulled a gun on the ABC officers.

Details

At least one of the two ABC officers fired numerous rounds, but apparently none struck the individual who fled on foot.

CMPD’s helicopter and several K-9 units searched for the individual but he was not located.

The larceny suspect—not the individual who fled—was taken into custody and named the person who fled on foot.

Mecklenburg County ABC is handling the larceny investigation.

Cornelius Police were not directly involved in the incident but assisted with the search and investigation.

NEW: Late Tuesday morning Cornelius Police said the second suspect is still at large.

ABC stores have their own police force?
    This doesn’t make sense.

Thank you! That is exactly what I was wondering. Why in the world does a bureaucratic department of the state government have their own police force?!

Why wasn’t this on the local news? (not the first time). This is the first I’ve hear or seen. Thanks for reporting. Any information about the criminals, i.e. description, residence, etc.?

Feeling the same way. Helicopters and police combing our neighborhood for hours with No notication to the community that an armed suspect was on the lose. Folks took to Facebook spreading false information about active shooters. If only there was some magic portal to inform the community that they should go inside and lock their doors. Oh wait. There is.

They aren’t over the stores. They have specific duties that require people to serve alcohol correctly and so on. They go into any establishment that serves alcohol and makes sure they are legit along with many other things that have nothing to do with those establishments.

What a waste of resources and money giving ABC stores their own police. NC politicians and their ridiculous fear of everything certainly justified this legislation.
