Annual barefoot tournament returns to Lake Norman

Logan Harrison of Davidson
Jan. 1. The annual Lake Norman New Year’s Day Barefoot Challenge is set for its 48th edition today, drawing competitors from across the country.
Athletes will compete in events including barefoot starts, tricks and endurance in an oval pattern. The competition is one of the longest-running barefoot tournaments in the world.
Last year, the men’s elite open division was won by 12-year-old Logan Harrington of Davidson. Logan’s father, Court, and his 7-year-old sister, Lydia, are also scheduled to compete today.
The event is hosted by the Carolina Show Ski Team and takes place at Lake Norman Marina in Sherrills Ford. The tournament begins at noon. Admission is free, and concessions will be available on site.
