New landmark on the lake

Mollypop mansion. Cornelius Today photo
July 17. There’s a new landmark on Lake Norman. A house under construction at the end of Mollypop—which is off Belle Isle, which is off John Connor—has a commanding view of the lake and a commanding price-tag.
The building permit values the construction at more than $7 million.
That’s actually a lot of money (spoken like Thurston Howell III), and that doesn’t include the value of the property it sits on—about $1.4 million, according to the Mecklenburg County Assessor’s Office.
Zillow says the median home value in Cornelius is $315,545.
The plumbing permit shows 33 fixtures as well as 10 appliances in a total of 19 rooms, including nine bathrooms.
The general contractor, Kingswood Custom Homes, could not be reached for comment but the owners come from the world of high finance.
Tear-down
Interestingly enough, the new house sits on the site of what was a nice home, fully updated with quartz counters in the kitchen, modern lighting, a renovated hall bath and laundry room with modern tile and fixtures, not to mention a new front door, fresh paint inside and out and high-end carpet.

This house was the tear-down on the Mollypop site
Party-worthy for most of us at $1.4 million.
Alas, it was torn down to make room for the new house which is actually much smaller than race driver Denny Hamlin’s nearby abode, which has a finished area of 21,593 square feet and a total appraised value of $9.74 million, according to the assessor’s office.

I think it is terrible that Cornelius Today had the nerve to write this article about a private home being built In Cornelius. It is not the business of the author, nor is it anyone else’s business, what this family chooses to build. No one has to know how many appliances, bathrooms, or rooms this house has within its walls. Now everyone does, thanks to this pitiful Cornelius Today article. Pulling permits to see how others are spending their money is embarrassing and creepy. Is this what your paper does?
I’d also like to add that the family building this home is generous, philanthropic, and humble. They are NOT at all what one would expect after reading your article.
If a new construction is 20 or 25 times the median price home in Cornelius, it’s news that bodes well for everyone. Although the article did not mention name or address, thank you for pointing out that the owners are great additions to Cornelius.
Get over it- I think anyone putting that much money in a Lake Front home in which I would not swim nor eat the fish out of, is news!
Wow they tore down one of my favorite homes on the lake to build this monstrosity bigger is not better people.
I worked in Cornelius for years and have seen dozens of the homes inside and out and the home that they tore down was quite beautiful on the inside on the outside it was very simple and quaint but I kind of like that Cornelius has gotten a little bit too gaudy a little bit pretentious and a lot of people who live in Davidsom see it this way
Who cares what a “lot of people who live in Davidson” think. Cornelius is an excellent place to live. Davidson doesn’t get a voice because Cornelius is pretty much Lake Norman. Davidson really only has a few LKN “ponds”. Cornelius used to be the ‘red haired stepchild’ of the area-not any more. Unlike Davidson, Cornelius has affordable homes and Cornelius also has the highest home values around.
Wowee!!! Must be nice to have so much money. But really, who needs 9 bathrooms???
Thanks Jeanne for being the first to respond to this STUPIDLY REPORTED article. This house is not out of range with most homes in this area. If you really check the square footage and prices of homes in this area most are $2
million + and 5,000 + square feet. The inside of this house was dark, outdated in many areas of the house. The outside did it justice. The inside not at all.
Also, this family has lived in the Peninsula area for over 25 years.
This article doesn’t bode for anyone.
It sounds like you’re confused by the median value of a Cornelius home—-$315,545, as we reported (quoting Zillow)—-and the $2 million homes you mention. It would take 50 condos at $150K each to match the local tax revenue impact a residence assessed at, for example, $7.5 million. Taxpayers in Cornelius will appreciate a new ratable that will generate more than $16,600 a year in strictly local taxes. We stand totally behind our reporting.
Reprehensible article written out of pure jealousy. The owners are two of the finest people you could ever meet. You embarrass yourself and your “news” periodical.
